For a steel main gate design, the real choice in most Indian homes is between mild steel (what fabricators usually call "iron"), true cast or wrought iron, and stainless steel. Mild steel is the cheapest and easiest to shape, at roughly ₹100 – ₹160 per kg fabricated in 2026; stainless steel 304 costs several times more but barely needs maintenance. This guide compares the three materials, explains section sizes and sheet gauge, finishes, sliding versus swing gates, and gives price per kg and per sq ft ranges, including a worked 8 feet main gate design price.
Iron vs Mild Steel vs Stainless Steel: What You Are Actually Buying
When a fabricator quotes a "main gate design in iron", he almost always means mild steel (MS) sections and sheets, not traditional iron. Knowing the difference helps you compare quotes properly.
| Property | Mild steel (MS) | Cast / wrought iron | Stainless steel (SS) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Typical use | Most residential gates, grilles and sliding gates | Ornamental castings, finials, heritage-style gates | Modern gates, pipe designs, SS with glass or HPL |
| Rust resistance | Low; depends entirely on paint or coating | Moderate; still needs paint | High in 304 grade; 202 grade can stain |
| Weight | Medium to heavy | Very heavy | Lighter for the same look (thin-wall pipes) |
| Design freedom | Very high; welds, bends and laser-cuts easily | Limited to available castings | High, but welding and polishing need skilled labour |
| Upkeep | Repaint every 2–3 years | Repaint every 2–3 years | Occasional cleaning; re-polish if scratched |
| Relative cost | Lowest | Medium to high | Highest |
Many good gates combine materials: an MS frame for strength, cast iron ornaments for character, or an SS frame with HPL wood-look panels. For the wider picture of gate styles, sizes and Vastu, see our main main gate design guide.
Section Sizes and Gauge: How Strong Should the Gate Be?
Two gates can look identical in a photo and differ hugely in weight and life. The difference lies in the section sizes and sheet thickness, so ask for them in writing.
- Outer frame: for a car gate of 10'–12' width, fabricators commonly use MS square or rectangular hollow sections around 50×50 mm or 40×80 mm with 2–3 mm wall thickness. Wider or taller gates need heavier sections or an intermediate frame.
- Infill: square bars (12–16 mm), flats, smaller hollow sections or pipes, depending on the design.
- Sheet: covered gates use MS sheet, usually 16 or 18 gauge. Thinner 20 gauge sheet dents and drums when the gate closes.
- Stainless steel pipes: SS gates often use 1.2–2 mm wall pipes; very thin pipes look fine at first but dent easily.
| Sheet gauge | Approx. thickness | Typical gate use |
|---|---|---|
| 14 gauge | about 2.0 mm | Heavy-duty or industrial gates, laser-cut panels |
| 16 gauge | about 1.6 mm | Good-quality residential sheet gates |
| 18 gauge | about 1.2 mm | Budget residential gates, small panels |
| 20 gauge | about 0.9 mm | Not recommended for main gates |
Gauge-to-millimetre values vary slightly between standards, so ask the fabricator to state thickness in mm. For stainless steel, insist on the grade: 304 resists rust well outdoors, while 202 is cheaper but can develop brown spots in NCR's humid monsoon and near pollution.

These designs work well in steel and iron, and each has a slightly different cost and upkeep profile.
- Box-section vertical bar gate: classic, secure and cheap. Keep bar gaps near 4" so children and pets cannot squeeze through.
- Horizontal louvre gate: angled flats give privacy while letting air through; suits modern elevations.
- Laser-cut MS panel: geometric, floral or jaali patterns cut from 2–3 mm sheet. Needs powder coating for the cut edges to last.
- SS pipe and glass: slim SS frame with toughened or frosted glass inserts. Premium look, but keep glass panels small.
- SS with wood-look HPL: SS or MS frame holding exterior HPL strips. Warm look, low maintenance.
- Perforated sheet gate: punched sheet in a frame; filtered views and a clean industrial feel.
- Cast iron ornamental gate: spears, scrolls and rosettes for classical fronts and farmhouses; heavy, so hinges and pillars must be sized for it.
- SS PVD-coloured accents: gold, rose-gold or black PVD-finished SS strips on a plain gate for a luxury touch without the cost of a full SS gate.
Sliding vs Swing Main Gate Design
A sliding main gate design moves along the boundary wall; a swing gate opens on hinges. The right choice depends mainly on your driveway.
| Factor | Sliding gate | Swing gate |
|---|---|---|
| Space needed | Clear wall length beside the opening, equal to the gate width | Clear area inside the plot for the leaves to open |
| Best for | Short or sloping driveways, wide openings, cars parked close to the gate | Deep driveways, traditional fronts, narrow frontages without side wall space |
| Hardware | Floor track and wheels, or a cantilever system with no track | Heavy-duty hinges or ball-bearing pivots on strong pillars |
| Maintenance | Keep track clean of dust and pebbles; grease wheels | Hinges sag if pillars or hinges are undersized |
| Automation | Simple rack-and-pinion motor | Arm or underground motors, usually costlier per leaf |
A cantilever sliding gate has no floor track, which suits uneven ground and heavy dust, but it needs extra frame length behind the opening and a well-designed counterweight section. Get a structural engineer to check the pillars and foundation for any heavy or cantilevered gate.
Finishes: Paint, Powder Coat, Galvanising and SS Polish
The finish decides how long the gate looks new. Most rust problems come from poor surface preparation, not the paint brand.
- Red oxide or zinc primer plus enamel: cheapest; lasts about 2–3 years before touch-up. Ask for two coats of primer after rust and scale are removed.
- Epoxy primer plus PU paint: tougher and more UV-stable; good for dark colours that otherwise fade.
- Powder coating: factory-baked, even finish. Ideal for laser-cut panels and modular gates, but the gate must be made in parts that fit the oven.
- Hot-dip galvanising then paint: the most durable protection for MS; costs more and adds a step, but is worth it near pools, gardens with sprinklers or on farmhouses.
- SS brushed, hairline or mirror polish: brushed hides scratches and fingerprints better than mirror.
- PVD colour on SS: gold, black or bronze tones that do not need painting.
Steel Main Gate Price: Per Kg and Per Sq Ft (2026)
Fabricators in NCR commonly quote MS gates by weight and SS gates by weight or running feet of pipe. To compare quotes, convert everything to a per sq ft figure for the finished gate. The ranges below are indicative for 2026 and include fabrication and basic finishing, not pillars, civil work, motors or transport over long distances.
| Material / type | Indicative price per kg | Indicative price per sq ft of gate |
|---|---|---|
| MS simple bar or pipe gate | ₹100 – ₹140 | ₹350 – ₹650 |
| MS sheet-covered or heavy gate | ₹110 – ₹150 | ₹650 – ₹1,100 |
| MS laser-cut with powder coat | ₹130 – ₹180 | ₹900 – ₹1,600 |
| Cast iron ornamental | Varies with castings | ₹1,000 – ₹2,200 |
| SS 202 grade | ₹300 – ₹450 | ₹900 – ₹1,800 |
| SS 304 grade | ₹450 – ₹700 | ₹1,200 – ₹2,800 |
Worked example: 8 feet main gate design price
Take an 8' wide × 6' high gate, which is 48 sq ft. In simple MS it would cost roughly ₹17,000 – ₹31,000; as a sheet-covered MS gate about ₹31,000 – ₹53,000; and in SS 304 about ₹58,000 – ₹1.35 lakh. For a 12' × 6' car gate, multiply by 1.5. Motorisation, pillar lights, video door phones and civil work are extra. Steel prices move through the year, so treat any quote as valid only for a short period.
Pillars, Hinges and Details That Make a Gate Last
- Pillars: a heavy gate needs RCC pillars with proper reinforcement and footing, not just a brick pier. Embedded MS plates should be cast in, not drilled in later.
- Hinges: use heavy-duty ball-bearing hinges or pivots rated above the gate weight; add a wheel under wide swing leaves.
- Stops and locks: a central floor stopper, a drop bolt and a good-quality lock box welded into the frame.
- Drainage: slope the floor at the gate and leave drain holes at the bottom of hollow sections so water does not collect inside and rust them from within.
