Overview

Stopping moisture before it gets into the building

Dampness is one of the most common and frustrating defects in Indian buildings. Salt marks at the bottom of walls, peeling paint below windows, leaking roofs in the monsoon and seepage from an upstairs toilet into a bedroom ceiling all have one thing in common: the waterproofing was either missing, poorly specified or broken during later work.

We prepare waterproofing details as part of the construction drawings, not as an afterthought. At plinth level, the damp proof course (DPC) is specified with its level, thickness and material, along with plinth protection and anti-termite treatment notes. For roofs and terraces, we detail the slope, the waterproofing layer, the protective screed, and the treatment at parapets, outlets and pipe penetrations, which is where most roof leaks start.

Toilets and wet areas get details for the sunken slab, the membrane or coating turned up the walls, and the treatment around floor traps and pipes. Where the building has a basement or underground water tank, we show the waterproofing system, its protection and the joints, since these are difficult and costly to repair once backfilled.

We do not tie you to a particular brand. Details describe the system and performance required, so your contractor can price comparable products. Many of these layers are hidden within days of being laid, so we recommend a check on site before they are covered.

Who this is for

How It Works

Your project in 4 clear steps

  1. 01 Identify risk areas

We review the design for plinth, roofs, terraces, wet areas, basements and tanks.

  2. 02 Detail each junction

Sections are drawn for each area, focusing on joints, corners and penetrations.

  3. 03 Specify materials

Performance-based specifications are written so comparable products can be priced.

  4. 04 Checklist for site

An inspection checklist is issued so each layer is checked before it is covered.

Questions about dpc & waterproofing details

Can’t find your answer? Call or WhatsApp us — we reply quickly.

DPC, or damp proof course, is a waterproof layer laid across the walls at plinth level, above the finished ground. It stops moisture in the soil from rising up through the masonry by capillary action. Without it, ground floor walls tend to show dampness, salt marks and peeling paint, especially after the monsoon.
It depends on the location. Roofs, toilets, basements and tanks each have different exposure, movement and water pressure, so the right system differs. We specify the type of system and the performance required rather than a single brand, allowing your contractor to price suitable products that meet the detail.
Yes. For an existing building, we first try to find the source, which may be a roof, a toilet above, a plumbing leak or rising damp. Once the cause is understood, we prepare repair details. Treating the symptom on the damp wall without fixing the source rarely lasts.
Common reasons include poor surface preparation, missing treatment at corners and pipe openings, damage by later trades such as plumbers and electricians, and no protective layer over the membrane. Most of these are avoidable with clear details and a check before the layer is covered with screed or tiles.
