Choosing kitchen wall design tiles comes down to three things: a surface that wipes clean of Indian tadka and haldi, a joint pattern that does not trap grease, and a colour that ties the countertop to the cabinets. For most Indian kitchens the safest backsplash is a matte or satin glazed tile in 300 × 600 mm or larger, fixed in the 2 ft band between counter and wall cabinets, costing roughly ₹60 to ₹300 per sq ft for the tile in 2026. This guide covers where to tile, sizes, 15 backsplash ideas and a cost table.
Tiles are one part of the kitchen. For layouts, shutters and storage see our modular kitchen design ideas, and for the full budget including cabinets and countertops see modular kitchen cost in India.
How Much of the Kitchen Wall to Tile
Older Indian kitchens were often tiled floor to ceiling. Modern modular kitchens usually tile only where splashes happen, which saves money and looks cleaner.
| Option | What it covers | When to choose it |
|---|---|---|
| Backsplash band only | Counter top (about 2'10"–3' from floor) up to the underside of wall cabinets, usually an 18"–24" band | Most modular kitchens with wall units |
| Band plus full-height hob wall | Backsplash, plus the full wall behind the hob up to the chimney | Heavy daily cooking; open-shelf kitchens |
| Counter to ceiling | All walls above the counter | Kitchens without wall cabinets, or with open shelving |
| Full wall (floor to ceiling) | Every wall surface | Utility or wash areas; rarely needed in the main kitchen |
Behind base cabinets and tall units, tiles are hidden and wasted. Paint or plaster is enough there, as long as the plumbing behind is sound and the wall is waterproofed around the sink.
Best Tile Materials for Kitchen Walls
- Glazed ceramic: Affordable, light and easy to cut. Ideal for backsplashes, where tiles do not take foot traffic.
- Glazed vitrified (GVT) and porcelain: Denser, lower water absorption and available in large slabs. Best for a near-seamless backsplash with few grout lines.
- Glass mosaic: Bright and reflective, but many small joints to clean. Use as a narrow strip, not the full backsplash.
- Natural stone: Granite or quartz continued up the wall from the counter gives a seamless look; porous stones like marble or sandstone stain easily with oil and turmeric unless sealed regularly.
Whatever the material, the finish matters more than the brand. Matte or satin finishes hide water marks; high gloss shows every splash but is slightly easier to wipe. Deeply textured or 3D tiles are a poor choice near the hob because grease settles in the relief.

- 300 × 450 mm and 300 × 600 mm: The standard kitchen wall tile sizes in India. Two rows of 300 × 600 mm laid horizontally fill a 2 ft backsplash with one horizontal joint.
- 600 × 1200 mm and larger: Fewer joints and a premium look. One tile height covers the full backsplash band.
- Subway tiles (75 × 150 mm, 75 × 300 mm): Classic and versatile, but more grout to clean. Epoxy grout helps a lot here.
- Patterns: Straight stack reads modern; brick bond is classic; herringbone and chevron add movement but raise wastage and labour.
Plan socket positions before tiling: switchboards above the counter are usually set in the backsplash, and cut-outs in large tiles must be marked in advance. Use our tile calculator to work out boxes for your backsplash area.
Matching Tiles to Cabinets and Countertop
The backsplash sits between two large surfaces, so choose it last, once the shutter finish and countertop are fixed. A few combinations that work reliably in Indian kitchens:
- Black or dark granite counter: Light, plain tiles (white, ivory, light grey) so the kitchen does not turn dark.
- White quartz counter: A soft colour or a subtle pattern on the wall adds contrast; avoid pure white-on-white unless the shutters carry the colour.
- Wood-grain or sage shutters: Warm whites, clay tones or handmade-look glazes.
- High-gloss acrylic shutters: A matte tile balances the shine and hides splashes better.
15 Kitchen Backsplash Tile Ideas
Clean and modern
- 1. White satin slab: A single 600 × 1200 mm slab height in plain white or off-white. Almost no joints, easy to wipe and brightens a dark kitchen.
- 2. Counter-matching slab: A marble-look or quartz-look tile that echoes the countertop's veining, so counter and wall read as one surface.
- 3. Vertical stacked subway: Long 75 × 300 mm tiles stacked vertically feel contemporary and make the backsplash look taller.
- 4. Matte terracotta or clay tones: Earthy colours hide haldi stains and pair well with sage or olive shutters.
- 5. Grey concrete-look: A forgiving neutral for kitchens with white or wood-grain cabinets.
Pattern and character
- 6. Herringbone subway: Classic white or pastel subway tiles in herringbone behind the hob only, with plain tiles elsewhere.
- 7. Moroccan or cement-print tiles: A patterned panel framed by plain tiles; use in one section so the kitchen does not look busy.
- 8. Hexagon tiles: Small matte hexagons in two tones. Popular in open kitchens facing the dining area.
- 9. Fish-scale or scallop tiles: Glossy, handmade-look tiles in green or blue for a statement wall. Higher labour cost.
- 10. Terrazzo backsplash: Speckled tiles that hide small stains well and suit white or wood cabinets.
Premium and practical
- 11. Full-height hob wall: Tile the wall behind the hob up to the chimney duct, with a slim stainless steel or tile niche for spice jars.
- 12. Backsplash with profile light: An aluminium profile light under the wall cabinets washes the tiles and doubles as task light.
- 13. Two-tone split: A darker tile behind the hob and sink, lighter elsewhere, to hide heavy-use areas.
- 14. Wood-look porcelain: Wood-grain tiles in an open kitchen link it to the living and dining zone without real timber near water.
- 15. Tile plus toughened glass: Back-painted toughened glass over the counter run and tiles behind the hob, where heat is highest. Confirm the glass is rated for use near a hob.
Kitchen Wall Tiles Cost in 2026
Indicative Delhi NCR rates for 2026, per sq ft of wall. Fixing typically adds ₹40 to ₹150 per sq ft, with small mosaics, patterns and large slabs at the higher end.
| Tile type | Tile cost (₹/sq ft) | Example: 36 sq ft backsplash, material + fixing |
|---|---|---|
| Plain ceramic, 300 × 450 / 300 × 600 | ₹60 – ₹100 | ₹3,600 – ₹7,200 |
| Designer ceramic, subway, hexagon | ₹90 – ₹200 | ₹5,000 – ₹11,000 |
| GVT / porcelain large format | ₹120 – ₹300 | ₹6,500 – ₹15,000 |
| Glass mosaic strip / handmade-look | ₹180 – ₹300+ | ₹8,500 – ₹16,000 |
The 36 sq ft example is a typical L-shaped kitchen with about 18 running ft of counter and a 2 ft backsplash. Epoxy grout adds a modest amount but saves years of scrubbing. Backsplash tiles are a small share of a kitchen budget; our interior cost calculator puts a full kitchen fit-out at roughly ₹1.6 lakh (essential) to ₹6 lakh (luxury).
Maintenance and Installation Tips
- Use epoxy grout near the hob and sink: Cement grout absorbs oil and turns yellow within months.
- Seal the counter joint: Run a neat silicone bead between counter and first tile row so water does not seep behind.
- Keep switchboards 6"–8" clear of the hob and sink and check with your electrician on safe positions.
- Buy 8–10% extra from the same batch for cuts and future repairs.
- Clean weekly with a mild degreaser; avoid acids on grout and on natural stone.
