Good master bedroom design starts with the plan, not the finishes: a room of at least 12'×14', a king or queen bed on the longest solid wall with 2'6" to walk on both sides, a full-height wardrobe of 8 to 10 running feet, and lighting on three separate circuits. In 2026, a complete master bedroom interior in Delhi NCR typically costs about ₹1.5 lakh at an essential finish to ₹5 lakh for luxury, including wardrobe, bed wall, ceiling and lighting. This guide covers master bedroom size in India, three worked layouts, wardrobe and lighting planning, and costs.

Master Bedroom Size in India: What Fits Where

Room size decides what the room can hold far more than style does. These are practical interior dimensions (wall to wall, after plaster) for Indian homes:

Room sizeAreaComfortably fits
11'×12'~132 sq ftQueen bed, two side tables, 6–7 ft sliding wardrobe; tight but workable
12'×14'~168 sq ftKing or queen bed, 8–9 ft wardrobe, a small dresser or study desk
13'×15'~195 sq ftKing bed, 9–10 ft wardrobe, dresser, lounge chair by the window
14'×16' and above224 sq ft+King bed, sitting area, and a separate dressing zone or walk-in wardrobe

In most new builder floors and independent houses we plan the master bedroom at 12'×14' to 13'×15', with the attached bathroom and dressing counted separately. Below 11'×12', choose a queen bed and sliding shutters, or the room will feel like a corridor.

Bed Sizes and Clearances

Standard Indian mattress sizes are 72"×78" for a king and 60"×78" for a queen. Add the headboard and side tables, and a king bed occupies roughly 10 feet of wall. The clearances below keep the room usable:

  • Beside the bed: 2'6" minimum on each side so both people can get in and out; 2' is the absolute limit.
  • Foot of the bed: 3' to a wall or TV unit; 3'6" if a wardrobe opens towards the bed.
  • In front of a wardrobe: 3' for sliding shutters, closer to 3'6" to 4' for hinged shutters and drawers.
  • Door swing: keep the arc of the main and bathroom doors clear of the bed and wardrobe.
  • Window: avoid placing the bed headboard directly under a window; it causes draughts, glare and heat on the pillow.

Three Master Bedroom Layouts That Work

Layout A: 12'×14' standard room

  • King bed with headboard centred on the 14' wall, side tables 1'6" wide on both sides
  • Sliding wardrobe 9' long × 2' deep on the 12' wall opposite the window, leaving 3' for the room door
  • Wall-mounted TV at the foot of the bed with a slim 1'-deep ledge; no separate TV unit
  • Bathroom door placed beside the wardrobe so wet feet do not cross the bed

Layout B: 13'×16' with dressing passage

  • Bedroom 13'×12' with the bed on the 13' wall
  • A 4'-wide dressing passage between the bedroom and the attached bathroom, lined with an 8' wardrobe on one side and a dresser with mirror on the other
  • Bathroom 5'×8' beyond the dressing, with its door out of view from the bed
  • Study desk or reading chair by the window

Layout C: 15'×18' suite with walk-in

  • Sleeping area 15'×12' with king bed and a two-seat sitting zone by the window
  • The remaining 15'×6' strip holds a walk-in wardrobe 6'×8' with open shelving on two sides, plus the entry lobby
  • Bathroom 6'×9' with a separate shower area, entered through the walk-in
  • Private balcony 4'×12' off the sitting area

Wardrobe Planning for the Master Bedroom

Most couples need 8 to 10 running feet of full-height wardrobe, plus a loft or top section for suitcases and seasonal bedding.

  • Depth: 2' deep internally for hanging clothes; anything shallower forces hangers to sit at an angle.
  • Hanging heights: about 3'3" to 3'6" for shirts and folded trousers, and about 5' for sarees, long kurtas and dresses. Split the wardrobe so each partner has both.
  • Drawers and shelves: keep drawers below waist height and put a locker drawer or small safe inside a hinged section.
  • Shutters: sliding shutters save floor space in rooms under 13' wide; hinged shutters give full access and suit larger rooms.
  • Materials: use BWP plywood or HDHMR for the carcass, especially on a wall shared with a bathroom, and laminate, acrylic or veneer for the shutters depending on budget.
  • Loft: run lofts up to the ceiling or false ceiling; a gap on top only collects dust.

Lighting and Electrical Points

Plan the master bedroom lighting before the false ceiling and wardrobe are drawn, so switches and wiring land in the right places.

  • Three circuits: general light (downlights or a central fitting), soft ambient light (cove or profile), and reading lights at the bed.
  • Bedside controls: two-way switching for the main light at the door and the bed, plus a switch on each side for that person's reading light.
  • Warm colour temperature: 2700K to 3000K throughout, with a dimmer on the ambient circuit.
  • Wardrobe lighting: sensor-operated LED strips inside tall units and the walk-in.
  • Power points: two sockets with USB on each side table, one at the dresser, one at the TV wall and a dedicated AC point.

Our home lighting design guide explains layers and fixture choices in detail, and our bedroom false ceiling designs show how to integrate cove and profile lights without lowering the room.

Attached Bathroom, Dressing and Vastu

A comfortable attached bathroom needs about 5'×8', enough for a wash basin, WC and a shower area with a glass partition. Keep its door off the direct line of the bed, and give it an exhaust fan or a window so moisture does not reach the wardrobe.

Many families also want the master bedroom to follow Vastu. Traditionally, the south-west of the house is preferred for the master bedroom, with the bed's head towards the south or east. Where the plan does not allow that, bed position and furniture placement can usually be adjusted without structural change; our Vastu for bedroom guide covers the details.

These ranges match our interior cost calculator for one master bedroom at NCR base rates. They include wardrobe, bed back wall, false ceiling, lighting, finishes and design, but not the mattress, loose furniture, AC or décor.

Common Master Bedroom Design Mistakes

  • Buying the bed first: a king bed in an 11'×12' room leaves no space for a proper wardrobe.
  • Wardrobe on the window wall: it blocks light and ventilation and usually leaves an awkward half-shutter.
  • One switch for everything: without separate circuits and bedside controls, the room is either too bright or too dark.
  • Bathroom door facing the bed: uncomfortable in practice and traditionally avoided in Vastu too.
  • Ignoring the AC: decide the AC wall before the bed wall; cold air blowing straight at the pillow is a common complaint.
