The standard Vastu for kitchen sink and stove is simple: place the stove (hob) in the south-east part of the kitchen so the cook faces east, place the sink in the north or north-east part, and keep the two apart rather than directly next to or opposite each other. In practice that means a clear counter of about 2 to 4 feet between hob and sink, which is also what a comfortable, safe work layout needs. This guide shows how to apply that rule to L-shaped, parallel, straight and island kitchens, what to do in a north-west kitchen, and how to correct a wrong placement without breaking the kitchen.
For the kitchen's overall direction, colours, storage and appliance zones, see our main guide to Vastu for kitchen. This article focuses only on the sink, the stove and the wash basin.
The Short Rule: Where Fire and Water Go
Vastu texts link the south-east to Agni, the fire element, and the north-east to water. The kitchen's own corners are read the same way, whichever zone of the house the kitchen sits in.
| Element | Preferred zone of the kitchen | Acceptable | Traditionally avoided |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stove / hob | South-east, cook facing east | South or east wall | North-east; directly opposite or touching the sink |
| Sink | North-east | North or east wall | South-east corner; directly beside the burner |
| Drinking water / purifier | North-east | North | Next to the hob |
| Dining wash basin | North or east wall of dining | North-west | South-east and south-west corners |

Why the Sink and Stove Are Kept Apart
Traditionally, fire and water are treated as opposing elements, and a sink placed directly against or facing the burner is described as a clash. The practical reasons point the same way:
- Safety: water splashing into hot oil spatters, and wet hands near a flame or induction top are a hazard.
- Working space: you need landing space to put down a hot pan beside the hob and a draining area beside the sink. Crowding them removes both.
- Two people at once: one person washing and one cooking should not be standing shoulder to shoulder.
- Cleaning: a gap keeps greasy splatter away from the washing area and water off the burners.
Our approach at Panache Architect is architect-led Vastu: follow the rule where the layout allows it, and where it does not, choose the arrangement that works best for cooking and apply a sensible remedy instead of tearing out a sound kitchen.

The kitchen shape decides how easily fire and water can be separated. Assuming the kitchen's walls face the cardinal directions, these arrangements work well:
| Layout | Hob | Sink | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| L-shaped | On the east- or south-facing arm, towards the south-east end | On the other arm, towards the north or north-east end | The easiest layout: fire and water sit on different arms with the corner between them |
| Parallel (galley) | On the counter along the east or south side | On the opposite counter, shifted along its length | Offset them so they do not face each other directly across the aisle |
| Straight (one wall) | Towards the south or east end | Towards the north end | Keep at least 2 feet of counter between them; 3 to 4 feet is better |
| U-shaped | On the south or east leg | On the north leg or the base of the U | Plenty of counter, so a clean separation is easy |
| Island | On the main wall counter in the south-east | On the island or the north wall | An island hob needs a ceiling chimney and a gas or power feed through the floor; plan it early |
If the kitchen is rotated off the cardinal directions, work from the actual compass readings taken inside the kitchen, not from the plot's facing.
Kitchen Sink Direction and the Cook's Facing
The kitchen sink direction question usually has two parts: which part of the kitchen the sink sits in, and which way you face while washing.
- Sink position: north-east is preferred, the north or east wall is acceptable. A sink under a north- or east-facing window is ideal in practice too, because you get daylight and a view while doing the most repetitive task in the kitchen.
- Facing while washing: many practitioners prefer facing north or east at the sink. It is treated as secondary to the sink's zone, so do not rebuild a kitchen for it.
- Facing while cooking: east is traditionally preferred for the cook, which puts the hob on the east wall in the south-east part of the kitchen. North is often treated as the fallback.
- Hob under a window: avoid it where you can. Wind can disturb a gas flame and curtains near a burner are a fire risk; a solid wall behind the hob with the chimney above it is safer.
Practical Dimensions That Make the Layout Work
Vastu tells you where; these commonly used planning dimensions tell you how much. They suit most Indian kitchens with a 2-foot-deep counter.
- Gap between hob and sink: about 2 to 4 feet of clear counter. Under 18 inches feels cramped; much more than 6 feet on one run adds walking.
- Landing space: at least 12 to 15 inches on each side of the hob, and 18 to 24 inches beside the sink for a drainboard or dish rack.
- Counter height: commonly 32 to 34 inches for Indian kitchens; adjust to the main cook's height.
- Chimney height: follow the manufacturer's recommended height above the hob, which is typically in the range of 26 to 30 inches. Our kitchen chimney buying guide covers sizing and ducting.
- Refrigerator: keep it at least a counter's width away from the hob, not wedged beside it.
- Sink bowl: a single large bowl of about 24 by 18 inches suits Indian utensils better than two small bowls.
Wash Basin Vastu Near the Kitchen and Dining
Many Indian homes add a hand-wash basin outside the kitchen, usually in the dining area. The same water logic applies: the north or east wall of the dining space is preferred and the north-west is acceptable, while the south-east and south-west corners are traditionally avoided. Keep the basin clear of the pooja unit, give it a small niche or vanity with a splash-proof backsplash, and leave about 3 feet in front of it so someone using it does not block a chair.
Fixing a Wrong Sink or Stove Placement Without Demolition
Most apartment and builder-floor kitchens come with fixed plumbing and gas points. These corrections usually solve the problem at modest cost:
| Situation | Practical correction |
|---|---|
| Sink directly beside the hob | Shift the hob along the same counter to open a 2-foot gap; a hob cut-out change and countertop patch is usually enough |
| Sink directly opposite the hob (parallel kitchen) | Offset one of them along the counter so they no longer face each other; if neither can move, a tall unit or open shelf at the aisle end helps visually |
| Hob in the north-east of the kitchen | Move the hob towards the south or east part of the counter if the gas or power point can be extended; otherwise keep the zone clean and bright |
| Sink in the south-east corner | Relocate it towards the north or east wall during a renovation; until then, keep the hob on a separate counter run |
| Wash basin in the south-west of the dining | Move it to the north or east wall when the dining is refurbished; a new drain line is usually the main cost |
Moving a sink needs a new drain line with enough slope, and possibly core-cutting through a wall. Moving a piped-gas hob must be done by your gas provider or an authorised technician, never by a carpenter. If the kitchen's structure or shafts are involved, bring in a qualified engineer.
Planning the Sink and Hob in a New or Renovated Kitchen
The cheapest time to get sink and stove Vastu right is before the plumbing, gas and electrical points are fixed. In a new home, place the kitchen, shafts and gas entry together at drawing stage. In a renovation, relocating the sink or hob adds plumbing and electrical rework on top of the cabinetry; our guide to kitchen renovation cost shows how those items fit into the overall budget.
